Unit Eight Reflection
Julie Baker
Of everything I have learned, I think my introduction of my unit project will have the biggest impact on student learning. I have done projects before, but I had not been as well prepared as I feel I am with this one. I believe the initial set up of checklists, rubrics, and student samples has focused my unit more on the standards that I want the students to learn. In this way I can better guide or facilitate the students to become self-directed independent learners. I can't wait to find units that my fellow teachers have created and start using them. I am also excited to create more units to use. Yeah! I did it!

Module Eight Reflection
Wow! I made it! Throughout this course, I have learned a variety of ways to implement Project-Based Learning and am excited to try it. Some of things that have found to be most useful is creating different types of questioning in my units such as the Essential, Unit, and Content questions. The other ideas or strategies that I found very useful was learning to create checklists and rubrics to guide my project plan. I have always used project ideas in my classroom; however, I do not think I had them as well organized and sequentially laid out as I will do in the future. My goal is to use the ideas and strategies I've learned to create more self-directed learners. I am very excited to scroll through the Intel library to gather more creative ideas to implement in my classroom as well.

I have gained so much knowledge in this class that I can transfer to my classroom. Probably the most useful tool for me at the beginning will be the ability to access tools for my students use. I will take time this summer to get back in to the whole program and explore. I came to this class rather limited in computer knowledge and I feel that I have come a long way. The Intel library will be a lot of fun to go through and to get ideas and make contacts. The specific type of questions, such as, The Essential Question, Unit ,and content will help me to be able organize my thinking when developing a unit. Thank you for all of your help! Kathy

Module 1: Unfortunately, today, I was more consumed with the technology process than the broader picture of Instructional Design.
Module 2 reinforced for me, the value of using CONSISTENT and CLEARLY DEFINED formative assessments. The module has also reminded me to reflect on the summative assessments that I use.
Module 3 has given me a small sense of the wide-ranging potential for students' learning opportunities through technology use.
Module 4 has introduced me to the possibilites...far beyond my comprehension!
Module 5 reinforced for me, the clear connection between self-directed learning and building character and learning life skills.
Module 6 has reinforced for me, yet again, that self-directed learners feel success and are motivated to do more...critical to meeting the different needs of different levels of learners.

Module 6 Reflection
Module 6 Reflection
This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiation in the following ways…I discovered, along with the help of my teammates, that I hit a snag when it comes to assigning group oriented projects. Like them, I grouped students “mixing” ability levels; with the best of intentions but always seeming to hit a snag. This module showed me some really cool tools to use to group students randomly, or I could do it according to ability level. Seeing examples of how I can design a rubric allowing students to assess themselves as well as the group during the whole process allows the opp. for more “self-direction.” By doing so and having them go back and look and reflect, it would hopefully give them the opportunity to grow as independent learners. This too would allow me to better meet individual learner needs.

Module 6
This module has helped me to develop self directed and differentiated assessments . It is essential to have a variety of assessment tools in order to meet the varied needs of children in a classroom.
Module 6
Self-directed learners are more involved in the learning process thus experiencing more gains. This independence also prepares them for life in the real world.

Module Six Reflection
This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiation in the following ways:
I realize that transitioning into a student-centered classroom requires adjustments on both parts of the students and the teacher. I think it will take awhile to teach students the expectations of a student-centered classroom, but it will be beneficial. Students, on the other hand, will need to learn to take an active role in their own learning.
There are four ways that teachers can differentiate learning that I found interesting such as content, process, products, and the learning environment. Teachers also need to make sure to teach to all modalities and accommodate the needs for all learners using appropriate strategies.

This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiation in many ways, including, content Process, Products and Learning Environment. Students all come to you from different learning levels and it is important to address their specific learning modalities. Helping students to become self directed learners is vital. Giving students access to products such as a web site list, and a variety of ways to express their knowledge will help them to become successful learners.

I always struggle when I assign group work. I usually heterogeneously group my students, but after reading this module I have learned the benefits of randomly grouping or grouping homogeneosly. I also struggled with how to assess group work and accountability. I now have a rubric to help my students evaluate their contributions and guide them with their learning. I can choose to group them to differentiate instruction and accomodate the needs of all learners.

1. How has this module helped you think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiated learning?
As an ESE teacher, I am always aware of individual differences. I always must make accommodations for learning characteristics. With the unit plan, those accommodations are already included in the beginning.

How has this module helped you think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiated learning?
You need to start with bay steps. You cannot expect a student to be in charge of their own learning right away. As a teachers you have to help them along the way. Initially, you help them with every aspect of learning, then slowly teach them to do it on their own.

This module has helped me think about student-centered assessment in the following ways…it’s really important! That one was a no-brainer, but as I’ve learned it gives students more accountability and there is more than one way to do it. That’s the really “neat” thing, especially since I’ve found resources that gave me ideas and things to “borrow” or “tweak.” Also, I’ve seen that when students are given increased ownership with specific guidelines or “path” to follow that the quality of work improves but that they’re more enthusiastic about it. Now, enthusiasm isn’t always going to be there…I get it, but it helps and adds to it. Now, if I only had the equipment…hmmmm.

It allowed me to also get student input on what they should be assessed with. Not everyone does well with a rubric and we need to make sure that the assessment is effective for all the students. You may have to use more than one type of assessment for one project, but it it makes it better for the students.

How can technology be used most effectively to support and assess student learning?
For starters…PATIENCE!! Secondly, I can’t help but think of the saying “don’t try to re-invent the wheel,” and maybe even more appropriately, “keep it simple stupid.” Oy, I mean in this unit, I did discover some “neat” ways of using technology to support student learning and assess progress as students move through the unit. The possibilities are limitless, and the kids love working on the computer with projects, but…like I’ve discovered too…FRUSTRATION sets in very easily which can definitely take you off track from where you want to go with it. Trial and error maybe is needed, or planning the particular unit over a longer period of time if allowable. My hope is, the more I “play” with these new discoveries the more confident/proficient I become I can feel comfortable in sharing with my students.

How can technology be used most effectively to support and assess student learning?
Technology is something that students are going to need all the time. It is the what you need to work in society at this time. To help support learning and to make sure that students are using the technology correctly it is something that you continue to monitor. Students will be able to be creative and this helps the teacher reach to all the different types of learners.

How can technology be used most effectively to support and assess student learning?
Technology can be a great tool to assess student learning. Students can communicate through blogs, create powerpoints, brochures, and newsletters to showcase their learning. Some drawbacks might be that students, like I did, become frustrated with the templates, and can not make the computer do what they want it to do. This will not assess the content, but will assess their ability to master computer skills.

Module 3 Reflection
This module has helped me think about the impact of the Internet on my students' learning in the following ways:
I realized that I really should teach students how to find Internet sources that are real. They need to know what to look for and ways to realize that what they are looking at or are reading needs to come from a good source, not your next door neighbor.

This module has helped me think about the impact of the internet on my students' learning in the following ways: Even though I do not have computers in my room for the students to use..I have realized how important the internet is and the rules concerning copyright laws. If I am in a co-teach classroom I can contribute by giving instruction on the importance of the laws. Maybe even show "Dog Island"

This module has helped me think about the impact of the internet on my students' learning in the following ways: how the web can be a wonderful teaching/learning tool, it allows students the tools needed to research and create projects. As the facilitator, I must research the sites I plan to use in my classroom carefully and I have become more aware of copyright laws and how to explain and share the guidelines with students.
Module 3 reflections
This module has helped me think about the impact of the Internet on my student's learning. I will make sure to talk to them about copyrights, unsafe sites, safer sites, and cite the resources they use to develop their projects.
Module 3 Reflection
This module has helped me think about the impact of the internet on my students’ learning in the following ways. Students come into fifth grade being pretty “internet savy,” or at least they think so. It is the “way” things are moving, and who know…before too long, textbooks will all be online. They need to be proficient, and I understand that, but there are still a lot of potential hazardous loopholes that exist no matter what way you try to incorporate it into the classroom for student use. Even researching online is not always “guaranteed.”
Am I excited about the potential that the internet provides for what we can do with students? Sure, but until there is an even better and safer way for students to use it the way I want them to, I’m going to be cautious with how I implement it.

I know my students are on the internet and probably know more about it than I do. Our team already has a website that students and parents can use to keep up to date on the goings on in our grade level. This site is updated daily with homework, links to resources, and upcoming events. We are considering adding a blogging piece to this, but I am very leery of this. I also don’t know how this would be required as all of my students do not have computer access at home. I do not want to take responsibility for what inappropriate or poor choices that students might make or how I would track student use. I am very concerned about cyber-bullying. I would prefer to use blogging strictly through the district when it becomes available.

In this day in age, our students know a whole lot more than we know about the internet, and I am not confident that all students would make the appropriate choices when using the internet. I am not ready to take on that responsibility in my classroom. I do feel that using a blog to create a “book club” idea in my room would be fantastic, but I feel this type of freedom to use the internet is asking for security and bullying problems. With the world of cyber bullying, I think I will stick with sharing ideas face to face.

This module has helped me think about using standards differently by the way I even look at them for starters. Before, they were written pretty “cut & dry”, explicit to instruction and focusing on a particular area. Now, learning about the essential question, and how the “big picture” can be used to help direct what you want students to learn/do has me feeling very optimistic about the coming school year. The standards are now written using the “big idea” format, which lends itself to taking it in a variety of directions across different subject areas. But it is essential to be certain of your “starting point.” Otherwise, you’ll go in any one of a number of directions, desired or not.
Assessments being embedded throughout the learning cycle are what every teacher wants to do, but not always how to do it, or the ever present issue of time. With the district requiring us to follow pacing guides in a given amount of time prior to the district assessments it is a constant uphill battle. I’m familiar with the different forms of assessment, and I feel that by designing this unit with my teammates and implementing this in the classroom I’ll see “how it works” and what can change along with way. All about adaptability.

At this time I feel confident that my partner and I are on track and creating a useful tool for the classroom that will benefit our students. There is sooooooooooooo much information to absorb in a short amount of time, but having the resources available will allow me to continue to go back and research more in the future as needed.

This module has helped me connect the standards, CFQ’s, and formative assessments together. It is more evident how all three of these concepts intertwine. Throughout this module, I focused on identifying my specific standards which lead me to creating my learning objectives for my students. Using the 21st Century Skills and higher-order thinking questions we, as teachers, can prepare a more comprehensive unit of study for our students.
From there, I focused on three types of questions: essential, unit, and content. This module also helped me focus on creating my essential question which is more of the global idea and working towards the more concrete content questions. Incorporating specific standards, CFQ’s and formal assessments allow our students to be open-minded and authentic learners.

This module has helped me think about using standards ,CFQs,and formative assessment in several ways. The standards help me to narrow my focus on specific skills. The CFQs require the students to use information to connect the EQs, UQs, and CQs. It allows the students to develop their thinking from global to specific. The formative assessment is a tool that clearly shows the understanding of the concepts.

Model 2 Reflection
Module 2 Reflection
Julie Baker
This module has helped me think about using standards, CFQs, or formative assessment in the following ways: I start by using standards as a basis to formulate a project based unit. Once I know the standard to be taught, I can then derive the learning objectives and meaningful questions I will expect my students to explore. For me, it is sometimes easier to start with the content questions, and work backward. Once I know the concrete, I can better formulate the unit questions, and finally come to the essential question.
I next will look to make assessments for my unit. I need to start with accessing students prior knowledge with a pretest and journal prompts. This will help me to guide my lessons. I will give students checklists, rubrics, and storybook guides to help guide them through the project.

Module 2 Reflection
This module has made me think a lot about the different standards that we use. You overload on them sometimes, especially in Language Arts because so many fit what you are doing sometimes. Essential questions where also hard for me to do because I cannot think that broad. After applying the knowledge learned from this module though I think I can become even better at writing everyday lessons.
Module 2 Reflections
As we finish Module 2, please reflect on how this module has helped you think about using standards, CFQs, or formative assessments.
Also, please write about any other insights, questions, or concerns you want to address in your reflection.

Module 1 Reflection
This module has made me think about my role as an instructional designer in the following ways:
I have to incorporate more critical thinking skills into my curriculum, and become more of a facilitator, rather than an instructor.
It has made me think of creative ways to implement technology in my classroom.

Module 1 Blog Reflection by Chelle Sims
This module has made me think about my role as an instructional designer in the following ways: It has helped me to create folders and to find information on different areas on different web sites. It has helped me to design a brochure/newsletter for communicating with parents about the type of learning (roles) their child will be doing in the classroom.

This module has made me think about my role as an instructional designer in the following ways: how to better use technology to develop and organize my instructional units, create engaging planning including brochures and newsletters to communicate with students and parents. I also learned little tricks of computer use to limit waste of time as well as frustration on my part. The assistance in class is helpful as I feel more free to explore and make mistakes knowing there is support available.

module I reflection
This module has introduced me to a new way of thinking about different ways to present information in my classroom. This type of learning can provide students the oportunity to be problem solvers , investigators and documentarians.
My concerns regarding this new program are ones that relate to the IRCD approach to mandating specific curriculum timelines. At the same time they are requiring teachers to become more "creative" in their presentations to their students, they are restricting teachers ability to make individual decisions in the classroom. The Intel program is an exciting prospect, however it will be very difficult to have the time or freedom to implement it in the actual classroom.

1. I don’t think this module has really made me think differently, but has inspired me to try and incorporate more project based learning. When I first started teaching, I used a lot of project based, group learning. Students loved these units. But as we were held more accountable to Pacing Guides, and district guidelines, I was no longer able to do these kind of units. I like to be a facilitator rather than standing up in front of the room and being a lecturer. I have already written a number of units, and students love projects, I am happy the district now allows us some freedom to incorporate them.
2. I don’t know how easy this will be to use for math. I don’t see as many long term projects in math, as I would in science or history.

Module One Reflection
This module has made me think about my role as an instructional designer in the following ways. First of all, it has really made me think of needing to provide more authentic and real-world applications into my lessons by incorporating higher-order thinking around big ideas. I also look at my role as needing to create activities where students are actively engaged in the learning process.
Other insightful ideas or concepts that struck me as interesting was the fact that unit planning is not linear but rather circular in motion meaning it involves circling back to prior steps to guarantee alignment among components of my instructional design.
The only concern I feel at this point is the fact the district basically dictates through pacing guides what we teach and when we should be teaching it. So, I am not quite sure at this point how often I will be able to have the time to implement this concept of Project-Based teaching philosophy in my classroom. I am sure there is an easy way to incorporate it, but I am still new to all of this.

Response to Module 1 Question
1. How has this module made you think differently about your role as an instructional designer?
I don't think it has made me think so differently, as we plan units together as a grade level team. Having to cover so much material in a specified amount of time doesn't always lend time to design a unit this way. As a teacher, I ultimately want students to improve more more complex levels of understanding (higher-order thinking). Now, knowing that there will be sufficient classroom resources to implement this method of instruction, I feel that there will be more opportunities to teach the "way we want to."
2. Please also write about any other insights, questions, or concerns you want to reflect upon.
I don't have any concerns, other than agreeing with my teammates that long term projects such as these would be better "designed" in other subjects besides math.
